The Starlight Duo (Lawrence Bush on guitars and vocals, Susan Griss on electric bass) is now offering a concert of songs from the Great American Songbook — classic songs of the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s, all composed by Jews. Each song is introduced with a short narrative that reveals the depth and breadth of American Jewish musical creativity.
Irving Berlin . . . George and Ira Gershwin . . . Marilyn and Alan Bergman . . . Betty Comden and Adolph Green . . . Yip Harburg and Harold Arlen . . . these and a host of other American Jews were composers and lyricists for the Broadway and Hollywood songs that evolved into jazz standards and have persisted in popularity for decades.
