Origins and History of Zionism | 01 Setting the Stage

In our far-ranging introductory session, we define terms: What is “Zionism”? And, we discuss the antecedents of the emergence of this movement in the late 19th century: The history of the Jewish People’s relationship to the Land of Israel; the origin of the names Israel, Judea, and Palestine; the transition during the Enlightenment from medieval societal structures to modern concepts of nation sate and citizen; the ancient origins of antisemitism; and the unanticipated dilemmas that Jews faced when they were emancipated from their ghettos and permitted to enter European societies.

Commitment to Sustainability

We care deeply for our corner of holy ground — 35 acres that includes welcoming trails through woods, across fields, and past wetlands and ponds.

We share the Jewish approach to living in balance and harmony with the earth. We do it through teaching and we do it through practice.

Our goal is to be an organization that fulfills the Torah teaching to be Shomrei Adamah: Guardians of the Earth. Our actions have been recognized by Hazon, the largest Jewish environmental organization in the United States.
